Ron Paul jumps the shark with shameful tweet and insensitive explanation

First of all, we generally like Dr. Paul around here, especially on fiscal matters.  However, his tweet today regarding murdered Navy Seal Chris Kyle was completely wrong-headed, insensitive, and foolish.  It’s as if Paul doesn’t understand the difference between combat and murder.

Chris Kyle was a sniper who “lived by the sword” in combat.  His death, on the other hand, was murder.  There’s a big difference there, and even if your disposition is to be against war, this was neither the time nor manner to address matters of foreign policy.

Dr. Paul’s explanation on Facebook didn’t make things any better.

As a veteran, I certainly recognize that this weekend’s violence and killing of Chris Kyle were a tragic and sad event. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle’s family. Unconstitutional and unnecessary wars have endless unintended consequences. A policy of non-violence, as Christ preached, would have prevented this and similar tragedies.

The constitutionality of today’s wars (and I agree with Dr. Paul that the constitution only allows Congress to declare war) has no bearing on the fact that Chris Kyle was murdered in cold blood.

Dr. Paul used the murder of a veteran as a political opportunity, and that is shameful, as shameful as Obama using the murders at Newtown, Connecticut to score political points.
