Sounds about right.
From ABC News:
Seddique Mir Mateen, the father of the man blamed for the Orlando nightclub massacre, attended Hillary Clinton’s campaign rally in Kissimmee, Florida, Monday. He’s seen in video sitting in the crowd behind Clinton on stage.
His son Omar Mateen, 29, killed 49 people and wounded dozens of others in the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history.
After the rally, Seddique Mateen, who wore a red cap to the event, told NBC West Palm Beach affiliate WPTV that he supports Clinton. “Hillary Clinton is good for United States versus Donald Trump, who has no solutions,” he said.
I fully understand that we don’t convict parents for the actions of their decendents. Let me just state that right off the bat. But that doesn’t mean that the story isn’t newsworthy on some level.
First of all, most parents would still be grieving their son’s heinous actions, not smiling and campaigning at political rallies for their preferred candidate. It is strange. There’s no doubt about that.
Secondly, and more importantly, if you’ll remember, right after the shooting, participants of a gay pride event in NYC held a massive sign that “Republican Hate Kills.” Here’s a reminder:
And just like that, the narrative was set. As usual the narrative wasn’t about the dangers of “gun-free zones” or radical Islamic terrorism or anything else. It was about gun control and, somehow, Republicans. Yes, the shooter was a liberal Democrat. And yes, he fit literally zero of the caricatures the left has created for the right, but that didn’t matter. The shooting was political and somehow the right was to blame.
But the fact that his dad showed up at this Hillary event helps drive home just how stupid that narrative was and is.
