At almost 2,000 pages (1,990) and almost half a million words (422,228), your member of congress might just need the cliff notes to understand the new Health Care Bill. To put it into perspective, it's about the same length as War and Peace. How long did it take you to get through that in school? But don't worry, it's a real page-turner.

Barack and the Constitution
Published by Sam on 23.10.09 at 10:25 AM."... the Constitution allows for many things, but what it does not allow is the most revealing. The so-called Founders did not allow for economic freedom. While political freedom is supposedly a cornerstone of the document, the distribution of wealth is not even mentioned. While many believed that the new Constitution gave them liberty, it instead fitted them with the shackles of hypocrisy."
So-called founders? no economic freedom? freedom supposedly a cornerstone?
Keep in mind, this is the same man who swore to uphold and defend the Constitution.
Would you swear to uphold and defend something that you felt is inherently flawed?

OOPS! Missing link not a link after all
Published by Wes on at 1:20 AM.
from the UK Times Online:
It was billed as one of the most important fossil finds in history, a "missing link" that would challenge everything we knew about human evolution.
Darwinius masillae, the primitive primate that was unveiled to the world with huge fanfare and a Sir David Attenborough documentary in May, seems now to have been less of a missing link than an evolutionary dead end. Far from being an ancestor to humans, the lemur-like creature from 47 million years ago belongs to an entirely different branch of the primate family tree that has left no known descendants, research has indicated.
I wonder if Google will make any kind of special logo about this whole thing turning out to be a dud.

Rift in White House Over Troops in Afghanistan
Published by Wes on 20.10.09 at 6:43 PM.This is the latest news on Obama's much delayed response to General McChrystal's request for 40,000 additional troops almost three months ago.
This time, it's the Afghan runoff election that's delaying his decision, but Defense Secretary Gates said today that troops are needed immediately regardless of the Afghan election results. Meanwhile, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel said Sunday that President Obama shouldn't send troops until the Afghan election runoff election is over.
And so, the rift between Obama's military leaders and Obama's political hacks widens. We hope Obama makes the wise decision to defer to his military leaders on military issues and does so quickly, as our troops' lives and morale are at stake.
Obama Manufacturing Czar Agrees with Mao
Published by Wes on at 3:32 PM."As we've tried to learn about this world, we have evolved some views. Generally speaking, we get the joke. We know that the free market is nonsense. We know that the whole point is to game the system, to beat the market, or at least find someone who will pay you a lot of money 'cause they're convinced that there is a free lunch. We know this is largely about power, that it's an adults-only, not limit game. We kind of agree with Mao that political power comes largely from the barrel of a gun. And we get it, that if you want a friend you should get a dog."
-Ron Bloom, Obama Administration Manufacturing Czar
Okay, now I'm puzzled at what Ron's point is in saying that he agrees with Mao. Obviously he's talking about the free market system being bogus, and he's disparaging it by saying it's only about obtaining power. But why turn around and "agree with Mao" and say that "power comes largely at the barrel of a gun." Clearly the Obama administration is not against having power because every policy they push is a push for increased Federal power.
- So, is Ron Bloom comparing the free market system to Maoism? Because that doesn't make any sense at all.
- Or is he saying that "the free market is nonsense" and that in order to obtain real power, we need to adopt a more Maoist view?
Statement 1 would make him a maroon! Statement 2 would make him dangerous.

Not Evil Just Wrong - Review
Published by Wes on 18.10.09 at 9:30 PM.Sam and I (Poor Richard's entire staff!) went tonight to the Nashville premiere of Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney's new film Not Evil Just Wrong hosted at Belmont University by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. I have to be honest, I was nervous about seeing the film, primarily because I believe in the film's anti-global warming hysteria message, and I didn't want to see a third-rate film about it (much the same as I wouldn't have wanted to see a low-budget film version of Lord of the Rings). Thankfully, my low expectations were far exceeded. While the film is clearly lacking a little polish, it does a tremendous job of driving home its central point- that Al Gore and other global warming alarmists are wrong on the facts and that their policy recommendations are dangerous for the well being of people around the world. It's the kind of film that I actually wouldn't mind showing to my friends who still cling to the hype of the green movement.
Especially effective was the films exploration in to the devastating effects of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (which, as the film pointed out, serves as a big inspiration for Al Gore's interest in environmental activism). The contrast the film made between heart wrenching scenes of children dying from malaria and the nutroots environmentalists lamenting about DDT's supposed negative effects on birds was a home run. Also notable was the complete debunking of the "hockey stick graph" of climate temperatures over time and the scenes of paranoid British school children holding up their crayon depictions of how global warming is going to kill them.
After the film finished, Drew Johnson from Tennessee Center for Policy Research took questions and talked a little bit about his organizations involvement in the climate change debate (notably their report about Al Gore's Belle Mead mansion having a a $30,000 utility bill).
Overall, I would say that Not Evil Just Wrong is a film well worth viewing for people on both sides of the issue.
Takeaway fact of the evening: the hottest year on record in the US was not 2006 or 1998 but 1934.
