An Exposition of Liberalism

I've been following the news, and lately it seems like everybody (except Hannity, Glenn, and Rush) believes Obama is a centrist and is going to govern accordingly. Personally, I can only hope he governs as a centrist, but there is no question that leaving out his scripted, centrist rhetoric throughout the election (save the occasional unscripted goof) Barack Obama is a liberal through and through.

Allow me to offer up a reminder via a survey Obama filled out when he ran for Illinois senate. It is more or less a written expose on liberalism.

Highlights:
  • Do you favor adding sexual orientation to the Human Rights Act? Do you favor domestic partnership legislation?
    • I favor both proposals
  • Do you support Medicaid funding Abortions?
    • Yes
  • Do you support parental consent/notification of minors seeking abortions?
    • No
  • Do you support any other restrictions on abortions?
    • No
  • Do you support capital punishment?
    • No
  • Do you support state legislation to ban the manufature, sale, and posession of handguns?
    • Yes
  • Do you support state legislation to ban the manufature, sale, and posession of automatic weapons?
    • Yes

Watch out for the ironies, including bits about campaign finance, Trinity United, Chicago Annenburg Challenge, Woods Fund, Project Vote!, etc..

I love to excercise...my 2nd amendment right

The office of the President's foremost responsibility is to uphold the Constitution of the United States. So, isn't it ironic that we have elected a man who shows so much disdain for it? After all, Obama's senate voting records show that he supports unconstitutional concepts such as infanticide, the "fairness" doctrine and even forced servitude. Further still, he said in a radio interview that judges "hadn't gone far enough" to push a socialistic agenda. Which leads me to the logical question, how far is "far enough"? It's obvious that when he takes his oath of office in January, he'll either be lying or doing a complete 180. So what's it gonna be? Something tells me it will be the former.

If he won't stop at free speech or freedom of the press or the right to own property or the right to life, what makes me or anyone think that he will stop at the right to bear a firearm? Nothing. Don't believe me? Read this. This dreadful thought instilled in me a strong desire to purchase a gun and since I had heard from various sources that gun sales were up across the country since the election, I knew I wasn't alone.

Gun Show

As luck would have it, the gun show was in town the following Saturday and my father and brother-in-law decided to go with me. As one might expect, the crowds at the gun show following this horrifying election were unprecedented. After waiting in line for half and hour just to buy tickets, we were finally ready to…wait in line again just to get inside. While inside, I reminded myself of my youngest niece on Christmas morning when she is brought to tears upon the sight of all that goodness under the tree. Though I didn't make a purchase that day, I was encouraged that there were thousands of like minded citizens as concerned about their 2nd amendment right as I.

Gun Store

My next stop was the gun store. And while it can be intimidating walking into a place like that (especially for those of us who only have a moderate knowledge of firearms), it was a great experience. However, because demand was so high, so were the prices. I just couldn't bring myself to spend what they were asking.

Online

I just knew that I would be able to find a great deal on a gun somewhere on the internet so I went to Ebay. Did a search for "shotgun" and was very encouraged to see all the very inexpensive shotgun parts listed. But after the third page of nothing but scopes, stocks and bee bee guns, I became suspicious. Sure enough, no weapon sales. Dang. So I went to Craigslist. Surely they'll allow weapon sales there, right? Nope. I couldn't believe it. After continuing to search I did find several sites that had fairly low prices but the entire time I spent searching, I was subconsciously convincing myself that I wanted to purchase one from a real person at a store.

Wal-Mart

For some reason, what should have been my first stop ending up being my last. Wal-Mart. Duh. Though I had purchased ammo many times from Wal-Mart, I had never purchased a gun. Furthermore, I knew that none of the Wal-Marts near me carried guns and I wasn't even sure if any of them did. After doing a little research and calling about 10 Wal-Marts in my area, I finally found one that sold firearms. It's a little less intimidating when buying from Wal-Mart because if they ask you a question that you don't know, you can always pretend that you were just buying some detergent and accidentally wandered into the gun section—a luxury one does not have at a gun store. In any case, the employees were very knowledgeable and friendly and the best part, they had low prices. After weighing my options, I decided to go with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge and boy I'm glad I did. This thing is awesome.

Well, that's the long, boring saga of my shotgun purchase. Whew. I feel like a real American again. I hope this helps any law-abiding citizen in their quest to feel the same way.

Looking to 2012

Much has been speculated about the Republican run for the presidency in 2012. The possible contenders have largely remained quiet on the issue, saying things like "that's so far in the future," but the reality of the situation is that the GOP began discussing their options even before McCain lost the election. PoorRichardsNews.com breaks down the most visible figures who may be weighing their options behind closed doors.

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin:
Even after loosing the VP spot in the election with John McCain, Sarah Palin may be the front runner for the 2012 candidacy. With astronomical approval ratings among Republicans, Palin is arguably the main reason McCain did as well as he did. The media morons certainly seem to think she's a permanent national figure; otherwise, they wouldn't bother running so many smear stories. Palin herself hasn't ruled out a run in 2012, and even as recently as this evening Fox News aired a Greta segment in which she stated that she's in prayer about what doors God may be opening for her.

Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee:
Huckabee was the last major contender to drop out of the '08 primary, and some think he may have started regrouping for 2012 as soon as he finished his concession speech. Huckabee seems to be unabashedly following Ronald Reagan's lead after he lost to Ford in 1976, taking the next four years to build up his support among the GOP's underrepresented coalitions. Part of Huckabee's struggle during the primary was his newness. The American people didn't know enough about him, and the media's coverage of his campaign didn't exaclty do him any favors in the introduction. Since then, however, he's began hosting his own show on Fox News, allowing America to get aquainted with this common-sense, compassionate, conservative communicator.

http://suburbanconservative.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/rt_mitt_romney_070425_ms.jpg

Mitt Romney:
While he hasn't been as visible has Huckabee since the primary, Romney came the closest to winning the '08 nomination over McCain, winning a total of 10 states. However, Romney trailed both Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee in Rasmussen's exit poll concerning likely 2012 candidates. Always the thoughtful man, Romney is said to be waiting to see what direction the party takes, and some close to him are doubting that he'll make another run.

http://blog.nola.com/times-picayune/2007/07/medium_23jindal.JPG

Bobby Jindal:
Louisiana Governor, and former US Congressman, Piyush "Bobby" Jindal has been heralded in recent months as a new Republican hero. After the misery of Katrina, Jindal took office of governor in Louisiana and oversaw the largest evacuation in U.S. history under the threat of hurricane Gustav. Rush Limbagh first mentioned Jindal as a possible VP nominee for McCain but it seems Jindal may not have even wanted the spot. Although he's the youngest governor in the country at 37 (which makes him BARELY eligable for the presidency), the rest of his resume makes him an intriguing name in the candidate hat. Jindal is a conservative and expert on healthcare, the son of Indian imigrants to the U.S., a graduate from Brown, and an Oxford Rhodes Scholar. However, Jindal would likely run up against some of the same trouble that Huckabee did this go-around as nobody really knows much about him yet.

http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/94/98394-004-F7E46D69.jpg

Newt Gingrich:
The former Speaker of the House has began popping up in conversations this week about a possible run in 2012. As early as 1996, he mentioned interest in running for president but didn't end up doing so. And again in 2008. Gingrich has in recent days been all over Fox News, contributing to stories about the '08 election as well as touting his book Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less, and he's also been vying for GOP chairmanship. Newt would undoubtedly be able to run an impresive campain, as he is the one who masterminded the Contract With America and the GOP's rise to congressional power in the 90s.

So here's the good news. All of the above-mentioned potential candidates are conservatives. The Republican party, in spite of the mainstream media, and fueled by exit polls and talk radio, seems to be leaning away from political center and back to the right. Riding the centrist train did John McCain little good in his presidential bid, and the lesson should be learned that the Republian base is conservative at heart and won't turn out for a candidate who isn't.

The success of any Republican candidate in 2012 depends largely on the success or failure of Barack Obama, but Obama seems to have the odds stacked against him. With worldwide expectiations at unrealistic highs, any Obama failure will seem huge (unless it's compeltely glossed over by media morons). If Obama lurches leftward in his governing, conservative America will push back hard in 2012. If the economy takes poorly to his plans of tax hikes and wealth redistribution, citizens of Hopenchange will be disillusioned. If there is another attack on U.S. soil, or he fails any number of possible international tests concerning Russia, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, Afganistan, Iraq, etc., Americans will begin to wonder if the security of a Bush administration was really all that bad.

Don't get me wrong, I hope that in 4 years, I'll be able to rejoice that Obama has kept America safe, converted to capitalism and saved our economy, and protected the sanctity of life both unborn and aged. But what are the chances of that happening? Obama scored 95% in the National Journal's ratings of senate liberalism. So, I guess I'll give him the difference and say 5%.

The Day After - Evening Edition

Still a Center-right country

From CNN's exit polls...

Voter Ideology:

Liberal: 22%
Moderate: 44%
Conservative: 34%

The President

Well guys, this has been a rough day.  Although there are a few bright spots (many of them coming out of California, oddly enough), yesterday was for conservatives what President Bush calls a "thumpin'."   All this today was magnified by unnamed McCain staffers circling the firing squad over Governor Palin,  media morons heralding the death of conservatism, and the slobbering love fest over President-elect Obama.  My emotional pendulum has been swinging wildly over how to feel about our new president, and I've decided that is the right and American thing to do to get behind our President and pray for his success.

Looking back on the last eight years, there have been thousands of idiots sinking their claws into President Bush, undermining his leadership at every turn.   I'm making a decision to respect the office of the President, and support him where I can.  Now, just as it is right and American to support my President, it is just as much my duty to hold him accountable for his decisions, and I will be the first to voice my opposition on issues.  It is our duty to stand by our values, stand by our President wherever we can, and pray that he heeds God's direction in leading our country.

Rush Agrees

"Mark My Words"

A huge loss for the pro-life cause

Every year, 1.6 million abortions happen in the United States. Every year, we could populate my home city of Nashville twice over with the number of children lost to this national tragedy. It is sadly ironic that hundreds of thousands of Americans went to the polls yesterday to voice their opposition to the war in Iraq but turned a blind eye on the genocide that happens in our own country every day. Don't get me wrong, the deaths of our brave soldiers are tragic. But when you compare the numbers, the 4,190 volunteer solders who have died since 2003 just don't add up to the millions upon millions of voiceless lives who have no say in their future, no say in their death.

Over the last couple of months, as the election drew nearer, I heard many of my Christian friends voice the opinion that the abortion issue is a losing battle. They said that just couldn't vote based on that issue alone. But now that the election is over and we have clarity through taking the other issues off the table, I challenge those of you who share this mindset to rethink their ideas. Consider the lives that are never given a chance. Consider numbers: they are simply overwhelming.

It simply doesn't matter whether or not opposing abortion is a losing issue. It remains the largest issue. Even if it is a losing battle, it is the right battle to fight. We have two years before the next congressional election. I hope you will join with me making a promise to never again vote for a candidate that promotes this awful practice.

Let's hope Obama doesn't live up to all of his promises:

Wes's Official Election Prediction

Granted, I'm not very good at fantasy football, but here goes nothing....

In spite of what a lot of people are putting out there, I don't think this will be a landslide by any means. I honestly believe McCain and Obama feel the same way. Both of them have been campaigning like mad this last week, and just today they skipped across the entire country at an unbelievable rate. Why bother putting all that time and energy in if it weren't close?

Before I start, I'll clue you in on some assumptions I'm making to help me get my predictions.

  • 3 Day Rolling Averages: Almost every poll is done on a three day rolling average, and these polls have been showing an enormous amount of flux. The majority of them have indicated some level of momentum on McCain's part.
  • The Coal Factor: The tape of Obama's intent to bankrupt the coal industry didn't really hit the news circuit until this morning. Mike Carey's response to the tape didn't hit the Wall Street Journal until after 10am Monday. Basically, none of the polls have had time to gauge the response of voters in swing states. The media has mentioned PA, OH, and WV as coal states, but has forgotten to include CO, IN, MT, NM, ND, and VA, all of which are large producers of coal.
  • The Early Vote: voters have turned out in record numbers to vote early, and in spite of Obama's enormous push for early voting, according to Dick Morris on Hannity and Colmbs tonight, the exit polls so far are showing roughly the same spreads of Republican and Democrat turnout as in 2004 with Democrat turnout only leading by 1 point over all.
  • Fear vs Excitement: I strongly believe that conservative's fear of an Obama presidency outweights the excitement Obama's supporters seem to be showing. Democrats talk about avoiding "four more years," but Republicans contend that this election is the crossroads for the future of our country well into the next generation. The Republican base turn out for issues, and there are some BIG issues on the line. Don't get me wrong, it's not just fear as much as a knowledge of issue and an understanding of the consequences. The genuine concern on the part of conservatives makes them more likely to get out of bed, stand in line, tolerate the weather, and actually pull the lever.
  • Poll Inacuracy: this has been talked about a lot. Whether its the Bradley effect, the riduculous starting spreads that new polling models are using, that Democrats seem to consistenly poll higher than their actual votes, or something else, many have speculated that the polls are overblown in favor of Obama. The range goes anywhere between 4 and 10 points. I'm a little conservative when it comes to applying a blanket boost or deduction, but I will say that the margin of error is there for a reason. And usually the error favors Republicans.
  • Undecideds: amazingly, there are a huge number of undecideds left, especially in swing states. The number of undecideds ranges from 4-9% according to the Mason Dixon polls. Now, there are plenty of folks that see undecideds leaning towards McCain. Dick Morris is leading the charge here. Now, I tend to think that Morris is right that Obama won't likely pick up very many of these voters, but I also doubt McCain will pick all of them. I tend to think that McCain will take about half the undecideds, and the other half will be divided among people who fail to show up to the polls or vote third party, with a few trickling over to Obama.

All that said Let's dig in:

North Carolina: I lived in NC for four years, and my gut tells me that there's no way Obama can pull out a victory. The current polls back me up...even Real Clear Politics (with its averages lagging consistently a day or two behind poll trends)has McCain up by a razor thin .6%. I say McCain wins 53-47.

Georgia: RCP has McCain up by 4 already. Chalk up to McCain by 7 points.

Florida: This one is close. It's well within the margin of error by practically every poll, but Rasmussen is showing McCain up by 1, and though Mason Dixon has Obama up by 2, they show 7% still undecided. Prepare to revisit the year 2000. McCain wins by a max of 3%.

Arizona: Obama's recent campaigning in Arizona had him searching for a knockout blow to McCain, but I think it will backfire. The turnout for McCain will be even greater than the 3.5% RCP gives him

Montana: McCain's already in the lead by 3.8%. I say he win by 6%.

North Dakota: McCain holds onto his solid lead and wins by 7% or more.

Virginia: This one is tricky. Rasmussen has Obama up 51-47, but Mason-Dixon says 47-44 with 9% undecided. I think this one will go down to the wire. However, Obama has been campaigning hard in Virginia and may very well hold onto the lead he has. If so, it'll be extremely narrow. Then again, there's a 60% chance of rain tomorrow which doesn't bode well for Obama. 1 point victory for Obama.

Indiana: McCain wins by 5.

Missouri: RCP has McCain up by a squeeky .5%, Rasmussen has it dead even at 49, and Mason-Dixon has McCain by 1 but with 5% undecided. I think McCain will hold onto his lead, and pick up a significant number of those undecideds. McCain wins by 2.

Iowa: Now here's one I don't understand. Iowa seems to me like a conservative state, but the RCP average predicts a 15 point blowout for Obama. Rasmussen has Obama up by 8. Obama wins by 5.

West Virginia: Are you kidding me? This is COAL COUNTRY! McCain builds on his large lead and wins by 12.

Ohio: this is a big one. RCP has Obama by 3.2, but this is where I think their delay comes in. Rasmussen has it at a tie at 48-48. Mason-Dixon has McCain up 47-45 with 6% undecided. Now, lets factor in Mike Carey and the Ohio Coal Association today. McCain is going to win 52-48.

Minnessota: There has been some optimism about Minnessota by the McCain camp, but I'm not buying it. Obama is too far in the lead for McCain to make up the ground. Unless a miracle happens, Obama wins by 5 points.

Nevada: Rasmussen has Nevada up by 4 points, with Obama crossing over the 50% threshold. RCP says Obama's up by 4. The only interesting thing to look at here is the Mason-Dixon poll. It's got Obama up 47-43 and 8% still undecided! Ok, now, Rasmussen also asks other interesting questions along the way and one of them is about whether or not they think Bush is doing a good job. This week Bush's approval in Nevada was up 7% from where it was 2 weeks ago (which doesn't bode well for the Obama campaign, which has basically run on the "I Hate Bush" platform). I think McCain will see that 7% reflected in the undecideds. McCain wins by 1 point.

Colorado: Rasmussen has Obama by 4, RCP has Obama by 5.5, Mason-Dixon has Obama by 4. Obama will win 51-49

New Mexico: The story here is much the same as Colorado, if not worse. McCain won't be able to overcome his lag in the polls. Obama wins by 5.

And last but not least.....Pennsylvania: Here we go. RCP has Obama by 7.6, and Rasmussen has Obama by 6. However, Mason-Dixon has Obama by 4 but with 9% undecided! 9% is huge! So, let's start with Mason-Dixon, take half of the undecideds and give them to McCain. Then, let's split the other half of undecideds into 3 parts: independents, no-shows, and Obama voters. I think this will make it Obama 49-McCain 48. Now, let's factor in the number of extra Republicans that show up because Murtha is an idiot and they want him gone. McCain tied 49-49. Now let's factor in Obama's comment about "clinging to guns and religion." McCain up 49.5-49. Now let's factor in todays news about coal. This will go on perhaps until well into Wednesday, but McCain wins. 51-49

FINAL TALLY: McCain 273; Obama 265
Popuar Vote: McCain 49.4%; Obama 50.6%

First, uproar over Obama's desire to bankrupt plants. The Ohio Coal Association issued a scathing response:

"Senator Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation's coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to 'bankrupt' our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices. • Colorado - Obama leads 51/47, after last week's 50/46.  Within the MOE, but not much movement.

  • Missouri - Dead heat at 49 all, after Obama led 48/47 last week.  Movement to McCain.
  • North Carolina - McCain 50/49, after being up 49/48 last week.
  • Ohio - Tied at 49, after Obama led 49/45 last week.  Movement to McCain.

In January of this year, Obama told a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle that he intends to bankrupt the coal industry. Newsbusters.org published a story today revealing that the SF Chronicle covered it up and did not include Senator Obama's comments in their story. Obama's comments came admist a discussion of environmental policy. While discussing alternative fuels, he said this:

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them.

According to U.S. Energy Information Administration, which supplies the official data for electricity production and consumption, in 2006 the coal industry supplied 49% of U.S. net power.

I Heart Huckabee

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1O9xTLTBc8

what the heck happened to the polls yesterday?

So, Thursday Zogby releases a poll that has McCain ahead by a point, but today he's back down by 10?  Something smells...  My suspicions are further heightened upon reading Zogby's near-gloating analysis:

"Remember, as I said yesterday, one day does not make a trend. This is a three-day rolling average and no changes have been tectonic. A special note to blogger friends: calm it down. Lay off the cable television noise and look at your baseball cards in your spare time. It is better for your (and everyone else's) health."
http://www.zogby.com/main.htm

Why would a pollster who's supposed to be presenting numbers and analysis make an off handed comment about bloggers (I assume he means drudge)?  Sounds like a little ideology seeping through.

But, then again, all of the polls looked bad today....Reuters, AP, Gallup.  What gives?  Is it really over?  I think the answer came from another poll.  IBD poll also showed a gain for Obama, but the analysis is interesting:

"Obama's lead firmed heading into the final weekend as he drew even with men, made inroads down South and added to his new lead in the suburbs. But this may have been due to parents out with trick-or-treating kids."

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/series13.aspx?src=POLLTOPN

Bingo!  Logic tells me that the IBD analysis is right on the money, and the McCain/Palin supporters were out gathering candy with their kiddos.  Only the coming days will determine if I'm right.  I hope that I am.

In the mean time, according to Dick Morris, the weekend might show significant shifting in swing states as the National Republican Trust is spending between $6 and 7 million (more than both the campaigns combined) airing ads like this in key swing states:

Although McCain has removed himself from the Rev. Wright debate, it nearly cost Obama the primary (and would have had he not defeated Hillary on a technicality over primary dates).  Morris is convinced people will continue to respond with renewed caution of Obama after hearing his pastor of 20+ years scream "God !@#$ America!"

Auntie Zeituni's illegal contribution of $265 is to be returned to her by the Obama campaign.

Democrats claim dirty tricks are the motivation for the story being reported this close to the election, but the McCain campaign hasn't done so much as even mention the issue.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1108/15161.html

Rush had a few things to say about it yesterday:
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_103108/content/01125108.guest.html

Obama (from his book Dreams From My Father): If Jane or Zeituni ever felt ill, if their companies ever closed or laid them off, there was no government safety net. There was only family, next of kin, people burdened by similar hardship. Now I was family, I reminded myself. Now I had responsibilities.

RUSH: Well, you haven't met 'em, old buddy, old pal. There's no safety net for Aunt Zeituni? I think there is a safety net. It's called a Boston slum! "Slum, Sweet Slum." She's lived here for a whole bumbling of years; she's lived here for five years. Your aunt, Obama, has been living in a slum for five years. Your brother is living in a hut in Kenya, and he says, "I am my brother's keeper. I am my sister's keeper." This kind of stuff matters to me because there's so many people in this country who think Obama is going to take care of them.

Obama's got jobs for lobbyists

Wall Street Journal:
"Democratic Sen. Barack Obama has said lobbyists won't run his White House. But senior campaign officials are crafting a policy that would clear the way for lobbyists to nonetheless hold important government roles."
